Minis: Fire Elementals 2

This is the very first miniature I've attempted using thinned paints - for Xmas I got some very nice Kolinsky sable brushes, along with Golden Retarder and Acrylic Flow Release. Since I normally paint 6mm Romans and their enemies, this is a very different style of painting for me and hugely challenging.

In addition to the Large Elemental, I decided to do the small one (002538b) at the same time.

Below is the basecoat using a roughly 8:1:1 mix of Skull White + Sunburst Yellow + Gunk #1, which I ended up watering down further. Gunk #1 is (10:1:1) Water + Retarder + Flow Release. Used a big ol' tank brush to slather it on. Ended up with loads of bubbles in the recesses however, which I had to carefully go back and pop with a fine brush, along with picking up any excess paint.

Q: what the heck caused all those very soapy bubbles? Was it just all the water or one of the additives?
