Minis: Fire Elementals 4

In these pics, I've slowly painstakingly built up layers mixing into my pale yellow blend progressively more Sunburst Yellow, then Blazing Orange, and then Blood Red. I plan to do Red Gore and then a Red Gore + Chaos Black mix at the uppermost tips. I also added in loads more Retarder and Flow Aid during this process. Gunk #2 ended up being something like 5:1:2 Water + Retarder + Flow Aid.

I had major issues during this time while getting used to thinned paints - sometimes it came out way too strong and completely covered up the previous layer rather than overlay it, sometimes it was too runny and bled into places I didn't want. Grrrr... why exactly did I pick such a fiddly mini to try this method on?

The issue I'm pondering right now is how to make the white hot areas "pop" more. They just don't look really hot to me. My second issue is that, by painting each individual lick of flame with it's own gradiation, it looks a bit blotchy.

Definitely would like to become a better painter so I will happily take criticism and advice on how to proceed/fix mistakes.
